Why did Social Security Schedule A Doctor’s Appointment For Me?
They schedule these examinations to get more information about your disabilities. This is a one-time examination. The examining doctor will not give you medical advice or recommend treatment. After the examination they will send a report about the examination and your disabilities to Social Security. There is no cost to you.
What To Expect
The best way to prepare for the consultative examination is to know what to expect. The doctor will ask you what your main disabling condition is, when your disability started, and what treatment you have had including medications and surgeries. They will ask you to describe your current symptoms. They will perform a physical examination like a general physical. For example, the doctor may look at your head, eyes, ears, nose, and throat. You may be required to remove your clothing and wear a gown for the examination. They may test your strength, coordination, reflexes, senses, and vitals (blood pressure, breathing, etc).
