If you have not worked, or do not qualify for Social Security Disability benefits, you may still be eligible for Supplemental Security Income, or SSI.
SSI Eligibility
SSI is not funded by Social Security, so it is not necessary for an individual to have accumulated a certain amount of work credits in order to be eligible. However, there is a strict financial restriction; SSI is meant for individuals who are disabled and who have significantly limited income and resources. To qualify for SSI benefits, a non-married individual’s countable income cannot be more than $721.00 a month. A couple’s countable income cannot be more than $1,082.00 a month. However, it is important to remember that not all income is countable so it is possible to earn more than $721 a month and still qualify for SSI.
An individual applying for SSI benefits must also meet the same medical requirements for disability as they would in order to be eligible for Social Security Disability. An individual who is over the age of 65 and who meets the financial restrictions for SSI would also be eligible for SSI benefits.
